Michael Jackson: First Anniversary of Death June 25

On the first anniversary of his death at age 50, hundreds of tributes will be shown on television in Michael Jackson’s honor. Whether you believe the rumors and allegations or you don’t, whether you think he’s “Wacko Jacko” or “The King Of Pop,” one thing most people agree on is the fact that he is a legend.

Gary, Indiana is sprucing up in anticipation of the crowds that will flock to town to check out the home where the Jackson family once lived. His mother, Katherine, and his three children will be there marking the anniversary in private. A monument to Michael will be unveiled outside the house where the legendary Jackson Five began their singing career.

The cemetery in Forest Lawn, where Jackson is buried, will be open for fans to visit on Friday but the mausoleum where his body rests will remain off-limits.

MTV and numerous other TV and radio stations around the world will be airing wall-to-wall videos, retrospectives and documentaries all weekend long commemorating the star’s life and achievements.

So, in between World Cup soccer games, I’ll be watching and fondly remembering this greatest performer of all-time and marvelling at his genius. How about you?

I admit— I’m still obsessed with MJ’s death and I’m continuing my own personal mournathon. Here’s a fact that you may or may not find interesting. Warner Brothers TV reported that Michael Jackson was buried in the high-security Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California 10 weeks after his death. He joined legends Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, W.C. Fields, Red Skelton, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Walt Disney and Nat King Cole there.

Michael Jackson is being honored posthumously with the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards being televised on CBS this Sunday, January 31, 2010. The show will feature a 3-D mini-movie of Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song”.

Michael felt strongly about delivering a personal message about the need to safeguard the environment in an innovative and stimulating way. Although the song was not a big hit, it did reach number one in Europe. He was planning to spread his message far and wide by performing it on his “This is It” tour.

The tribute will feature Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, Carrie Underwood, Usher, and the voice of Michael Jackson

Billie Jean was the second single released from Michael Jackson’s Thriller album on January 2, 1983. The song was written, arranged and composed by Michael Jackson and produced by Quincy Jones. The song and the music video are credited with propelling Thriller into the best-selling album of all time. The song was written about a fictitious character named Billie Jean, who personified MJ’s real-world struggle to deal with obsessive fans. In this case, “Billie Jean is an obsessed fan who alleges that he is the father of one of her children.

“Billie Jean” was a worldwide success; it became one of the best-selling singles of 1983, topped the US and UK charts simultaneously and went platinum in 1989. It has won two Grammy Awards. The video was inducted into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame.

Michael Jackson’s sixth studio album, Thriller , was released in 1982. It quickly shot to the top and is still considered the best-selling album of all time. The album broke records by winning eight Grammy Awards in 1984, including Album of the Year. The album has nine songs. All seven of the songs that were released as singles reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 .

Thriller was the last single released from the album, in 1984. It became one of Michael’s signature songs. Thriller’s lyrics deal with dark themes of paranoia, the occult and the supernatural. The 14-minute mini-horror flick, directed by John Landis, cost half a million US dollars to make, and it is regarded as the greatest music video of all-time. John’s wife, Deborah, designed Michael’s fierce red jacket for the video.

During the video, Michael transforms into a werewolf and then a zombie and is choreographed dancing with the zombies. The choreography has become a part of global pop culture, replicated everywhere from Bollywood scenes and even in a video from prisons in the Philippines that went viral.

The lovely Ola Ray, a former Playboy centerfold, co-stars with him in the video. Ola Ray has since complained about not being able to collect all the royalties due to her. She eventually sued for the uncollected royalties on May 6, 2009 less than two months before Michael’s death on June 25.

Since 2007, every October, a few days before Halloween, dancers in cities all over the world perform a simultaneous dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” with specially arranged choreography from the music video. The event is called “Thrill the World”. In 2008, 4,177 people from 10 countries simultaneously danced to Thriller during this event.

I became a fan of Michael Jackson’s only about 10 years ago—- long after he first struck it BIG in the entertainment world. I never appreciated his many talents when he was getting his unbroken string of mega-hits. I was too busy following other entertainers and celebrities.

Once I discovered what a mind-blowing singer, dancer and performer he was, I quickly came to realize the tremendous impact that he’s had on the entertainment industry. He was not only talented, he was innovative and unusual. He did things that had never been done before and he did it from his heart and soul.

Now that he’s gone, I realize even more the indelible impression he’s left and the gaping void, as I believe he was unique and irreplaceable. Without getting into all the controversial details, I believe he was misunderstood and much maligned and most of it was undeserved. True, he had his weird eccentricities, but I feel that he was a good person who had suffered a lot since childhood. Too bad that it took his death for people all around the globe to realize the legacy he left through his music and dancing and superbly entertaining performances.

In honour of his memory and in anticipation of all the wanna-be Michael Jackson lookalikes for Halloween, this site was created to share fun facts, news and information about the undisputed King of Pop— the greatest entertainer to ever live!
