It was released on February 14, 1983 as the album’s third single.

The music video focused on the power of dance to bring together rival gangs. The choreography of synchronized dancers became a familiar Jackson trademark. The video included 80 actual gang members dancing alongside 18 professional dancers. In it, Michael Jackson wears a red leather jacket that became a distinctive look for him.

“Beat It” was awarded several prestigious music awards, won Record of the year, topped many music charts and went platinum in 1989. It was a huge hit for Michael and he performed it on all of his world tours.
